A silver gelatin print is a black and white photograph on paper coated with light sensitive silver halide suspended in gelatin, developed in photographic chemistry: the classic darkroom print of the twentieth century, known for its rich tonal range and archival quality. Curators, galleries, and auction catalogs list the same object as a gelatin silver print; photographers often just say fiber print or BW fiber print. Ours are made from your digital file on Harman Digital Galerie fiber based or RC paper.
Your file is laser exposed directly onto Harman Digital Galerie black and white photographic paper on our 50 inch Polielettronica Laserlab, then wet processed in real photographic chemistry. It is a true photographic print, not an inkjet print. Our C-Prints use the same exposure and processing on chromogenic color paper.
The paper and the chemistry are the same; the exposure is different. A hand printed black and white print is exposed from a negative under an enlarger. Ours is exposed from your file with a laser, then wet processed in the same black and white chemistry, so the finished object is a true silver gelatin print on fiber based paper rather than an inkjet print. If you shoot film, we can scan your negatives first and print from the scans.
Two papers, both true silver gelatin: Harman Digital Galerie fiber and Harman Digital Galerie RC. Harman is the UK company spun off from Ilford, the name most photographers recognize in black and white paper. You are choosing a surface as well as a base. Fiber has a gloss surface on the classic fiber base, the traditional choice for exhibitions and collections, with the surface depth fiber prints are known for. RC is resin coated with a pearl surface: it stays flat, handles easily, and suits everyday display and portfolio work. Pearl is also the answer if you do not want a glossy print. If you are not sure, pick fiber for gallery and collector work and RC for everything else.
Not a true matte. The fiber based paper has a gloss surface, and Harman Digital Galerie RC has a pearl surface, which is the non-glossy choice for silver gelatin. If the work needs a fully matte black and white surface, a pigment print on matte cotton rag from our giclée service is the alternative; it is a different object, so order a small test print of each if you are deciding.
When properly processed, washed, and stored, silver gelatin prints have a proven archival lifespan exceeding 100 years, the standard for museum collections and the reason gelatin silver prints remain the reference object for black and white photography.
